How formulators use astragalus extract in immune-support products

What buyers ask us about mesh. 80 mesh is our standard particle size and it covers the large majority of capsule and tablet applications; 100 mesh is available on request for fine direct-compression work. If your line runs a high-speed capsule filler, tell us the fill weight and we will confirm the mesh before you order — it is cheaper to settle on paper than after the first pallet.

Astragalus is one of those ingredients that behaves differently depending on where it lands in a formula. The grade you choose for a two-piece capsule is not automatically the grade you want in a scoop-and-stir powder. This article looks at where the extract actually gets used, and what the powder characteristics mean for each format.

Capsules and tablets

The largest share of astragalus volume in the U.S. market goes into capsule and tablet immune-support formulas, usually alongside vitamin C, zinc, elderberry or reishi. For this format the polysaccharides 50% grade with astragaloside IV 0.3% is the standard workhorse: enough assay to support the label, and a powder that flows predictably at 80 mesh.

Two practical points for compression work: the material is a fine light-brown to yellow-brown powder with loss on drying at or below 5.0% and total ash at or below 5.0%, so it blends cleanly without adding meaningful moisture to a formula. If your line runs very high fill weights, 100 mesh is available on request.

Powders, sachets and drink mixes

In scoopable powder formats, astragalus usually appears in traditional-style immune or qi blends, often with goji, reishi or cordyceps. The extract disperses in water rather than dissolving instantly, which is normal for a polysaccharide preparation. For RTD beverages and clear drink premixes, the polysaccharide fraction needs a solubility discussion with your formulator early — and that is a conversation worth having before the sachet artwork is approved.

Functional foods and wellness teas

The same grades used in supplements work in functional teas and health-food applications, where the extract is blended with other botanicals and the specification discipline matters just as much. Our typical COA — polysaccharides 50.4% (UV), astragaloside IV 0.52% (HPLC), loss on drying 3.8%, total ash 3.1%, heavy metals well below the usual limits — is the document your QA team will want on file.

Packing and shelf life

The standard pack is a 25 kg fibre drum with a double polyethylene liner, with an unopened shelf life of 24 months stored cool, dry and away from direct sunlight. The material is supplied as a pure extract with no carrier; maltodextrin-carried versions are available on request if your blending process needs it.

What we need from you to quote well

The dosage form, the target claim, and whether the astragaloside IV figure matters to your specification. With those three answers we can confirm the grade, the mesh and the documentation package in one business day — and send a sample drawn from the production lot for your QA to test before anything moves.

Frequently asked questions

What dosage forms is astragalus extract used in?
Primarily capsules, tablets, powder blends and sachets, plus functional teas and wellness beverages. For capsules and tablets the polysaccharides 50% grade with astragaloside IV 0.3% is the standard workhorse; powders and teas typically blend it with goji, reishi or other immune botanicals.

How is astragalus extract packed and how long does it keep?
25 kg fibre drums with a double polyethylene liner, 24 months unopened shelf life when stored cool, dry and away from direct sunlight. The standard material is a pure extract with no carrier; maltodextrin-carried versions are available on request.

What particle size should I specify?
80 mesh is the standard and covers most capsule and tablet applications; 100 mesh is available on request for fine direct-compression work. Tell us your fill weight and line speed and we will confirm the right mesh before you order.
